The Tradition Continues – 2025 Donkey Derby
Join us for the annual Donkey Derby, a time-honored tradition proudly hosted by E Clampus Vitus Chapter 7-11 on Saturday, April 26, 2025. The event will take place at Magalia Community Church, located in the lower section of the church’s property.
Parking: Handicap parking is available in the church’s parking lot. All other attendees are kindly asked to park on the street. Upon arrival, an ECV 7-11 Clamper will be available to direct you to the ballfield.
Donkey Release: 8:30 AM at Whiskey Flats
Obstacle Course Begins: Approximately 9:30 AM
Calling All Donkeys – We Need You!
This event can’t happen without donkeys! If you have a donkey, we need you to bring it and join in on the fun. Whether your donkey is a seasoned pro or brand new to the Derby, all are welcome. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate history, enjoy some friendly competition, and be part of this beloved tradition. If you or someone you know has a donkey to participate, please reach out – we need as many as possible!
Compete for Cash Prizes!
Not only will competitors get to be part of an exciting tradition, but this year’s Donkey Derby will feature a cash prize for the top competitors! So bring your donkey, test your skills, and see if you have what it takes to claim victory—and some extra cash!
A Golden Legacy: The Largest Nugget in Northern California
As we celebrate our Clamper heritage, it’s only fitting to honor one of Northern California’s most legendary finds. In 1854, a massive gold nugget weighing 54 pounds was unearthed in Butte County, making it one of the largest ever discovered in the region. Found near Magalia (formerly known as Dogtown), this extraordinary treasure cemented the area's reputation as a gold-rich frontier and fueled the feverish rush that shaped California’s history.
Just as the early miners tested their grit in the search for gold, our competitors will put their skills to the test in the Donkey Derby’s obstacle course, proving their mettle in this lively and historic tradition.
Come witness the excitement as competitors navigate the course with their donkeys in a spirited test of skill and determination. We look forward to seeing you there – and don’t forget to bring a donkey!
